Small cotton or terry cloth bibs are perfect for catching spit-up and drool. So when a total stranger points out that your baby is spitting up (thanks for the update!), you can wipe it away without flinching. These little bibs also add to the overall cuteness factor.

Cloth diapers are the perfect size and thickness for burping, catching spit up, wiping drool, quick changes and general clean up. Designer burp cloths are nice touch for feeding in public. Have some of both on hand.

A high chair is a great registry item, but won't need to be unpacked until solid food is introduced, usually around five months or so. First and foremost, a high chair should be easy to clean, with a removable plastic tray and seat that can be wiped down or rinsed off. Learning to eat is a messy business!

The dishwasher looks attractive to new parents pretty quickly. However, if you don't have a dishwasher or are set against it for baby items, a separate drying rack made to hold little parts is a good idea. Also nice if you just wash a few pieces by hand from time to time.
